On the basis of these promises, the Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and the leaders of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights agreed to a moratorium on all demonstrations. In the course of the negotiations, certain promises were made by the merchants-for example, to remove the stores' humiliating racial signs. Then, last September, came the opportunity to talk with leaders of Birmingham's economic community. ![]()

At the last minute, he chose instead to go to art school in North Carolina, where he studied graphic design. His interest in science led me to believe that I'd be a scientist himself. His parents read to him until he could read himself, and he became an obsessive reader. ![]() Wherever he lived, he kept a menagerie of lizards, turtles, spiders, and other animals, collected rocks and fossils, and blew things up in his small chemistry lab.īecause he moved often, Steve didn't have a large group of friends, and he spent a lot of time with books. Steve lived in North Carolina, Panama, Virginia, Kansas, and Colorado. His father, who would become a physics professor and astronomer (and recently his co-author on a book about the Solar System), was in the military and, later, working on science degrees at several different universities. If you’re like me, you’ve lived the first few decades of your life convinced that books just sort of download from the head of your favorite writer directly into your hands, farm-to-Kindle style.
